The second -generation Honda "NSX Type S (NSX Type S)" officially announced on August 30.Performance design is a concept keyword.I asked the designer the meaning.
Honda Technical Research Institute Design Center Dai Hara responded to the interview. He has been in charge of the Civic Type R design in the past. The Civic Type R, also called "Gundam", is quite different from the NSX type S.What kind of commitment was?
◆ I didn't want to make a car just replaced with after -sales parts
----: The front and rear of Type S have changed significantly compared to the base model.I didn't think it would change so far, but was this form of design first?
Hara Dai (hereafter abbreviation): No, rather the opposite. In Type S, there was a major premise that performance would be improved as a culmination of Super Sports NSX.It will be created as a sports car that anyone can enjoy the performance of the total output of 610ps.To do this, it's an approach to change where you need to change, where to change, (as a designer) and to reach out.The result is the first performance and what you need to do to achieve it.
----: Is there any place to stick to design?
Hara: There is a base car and pursuing performance may be close to a modified car approach. However, Type S did not want to make a car that just replaced with a bumper of after -parts, so I was particularly particular about eliminating such discomfort.
How do you give the overall perfection as a single car?Don't be afraid of the unusual places. However, if it is too cohesive, it will look like a different color of the bass model and optional differences.
For example, the size and position of the Honda emblem on the front has changed, but how to use the base design hood line? This position and the shape of the front are 0 clay models..I cut it with a 01mm order. The shape of the headlight itself has not been changed, but a black part like a kumatori has been added to the contour. It is a device that does not feel uncomfortable even if the design changes.
----: Is there a motif that you refer to when considering the overall design?
Hara: In the appearance, the racing machine was quite helpful. The GT3 and GT500 vehicles were measured by looking at the real thing and studying. In terms of performance, I learned that the details of the racing machine and the terminal processing were compelling.
There was also a desire to get closer to the image of a jet fighter (fighter), which was also the first image concept in the inner part (of the designer).
◆ It is a design that is not just a mass -produced car
----: I heard that you were in charge of exterior design but also participated in the wind tunnel experiment.
Hara: Yes.I've always been to the wind tunnel experiment, but this time I was involved in different ways. The design team had a race aerodynamic engineer, so I got an idea from there and thought about the shape together. You were more conscious of aerodynamics than usual.
Although it is a rear diffuser, if you look closely, the feeling of the fin is not even or the shape and angle are not the same.It was created as a result of exchanging aerodynamic engineers and exchanging wind tunnel experiments and simulation data, but could not be realized without the degree of freedom of the shape of carbon material instead of injection molding.
----: Speaking of aerodynamics, there is no rear wing.
Hara: Downforce can be earned by attaching something like GT wing, but I wanted to avoid such retrofit parts, so I use the force pulling from below in the flow of air from the front of the lower body to the rear (negative pressure).I am.
Since the basic concept is "performance design", the exterior and interior design change is also meaningful, as changing engine motors, transmissions, and suspensions.I can talk about all changes that this has such an effect (laughs).
----: When you hear the story, it feels like you're making a one-off competition or complete car.
Hara: Certainly, it can be called "Mizukami Special" (Development Officer: Satoshi Mizukami).Although the number of units may be small (350 units only in the world), it may be that they wanted to have a water LPL or make a satisfactory car. However, there was no detailed instruction on the water. It was sensitive to the whole harmony or a sense of unity, and there were many such instructions.
It is a feeling that craftsmen gathered for each component there. There were things like each other's "air -spaced invasion" between the teams, but that's what craftsmen. As a result, I think it was a good car that was not just a mass -produced car.
